Burundi

Situated on a plateau in the heart of Africa, Burundi enjoys an equatorial climate tempered by altitude (1,700 metres on average in the centre, lower on the outskirts). Burundi's economy is mainly rural, based on agricultural exports and livestock farming. Over 90% of the population depends on agriculture, which accounts for over 50% of GDP ($800 million in 1999). Industry accounted for 18% of GDP in 1999, with services accounting for 32%. In 2019, Burundi's population was estimated at 12 million.
