The Republic of Malawi is located in Southern Africa, between Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania. Malawi's economy is essentially based on agriculture, which accounts for almost 30 % of its GDP and over 80 % of its export earnings. Eighty-five per cent of the population lives in rural areas, and 89 % of the working population is employed informally, with 91 % of these jobs in rural areas.
